Early Season Snow Means Strong Start To Oregon Resorts
Right from the git-go, the Pacific Northwest has gotten the lion's share on snowfall this season, and Oregon's nine mountains and resorts have opened with plenty of depth.
All Covid-19 standards are in place and should be reviewed before heading up to the mountains. Here's what's going on at the ski and snowboard slopes of the Beaver State:
Between Corvallis and Bend, Hoodoo Ski Area has a new carpet lift for learners in the Easy Rider chair area. Also, the Oregon hill will four evenings a week for night skiing till 9 p.m., adding Wednesday to the schedule.
Off I-84 west of the Idaho state line, Anthony Lakes invites fifth and sixth graders for free Sunday lessons, starting Jan. 10 and running eight weeks. Free ticket, rental, and lesson included. Attend seven of eight weeks, and get a $150 season pass for next season. The resort also has created a temporary nordic area, and parking status signs on the access road.
Outside of Bend, Mt. Bachelor has instituted a parking reservation system in order to keep a handle on the number of skiers and riders coming up the hill. Spots may be reserved on the day of arrival through a parking app. The volcano mountain also has 20 RV camping spots open this winter.
An hour's drive from Portland, Mt. Hood Meadows, RV overnight parking can be reserved online. Night skiing and riding are underway Wednesday through Sundays, 2 to 9 p.m. -- with its own ticket.
Neighbor Timberline Lodge upgraded its Pucci Lift this summer, replacing the existing fixed-grip triple chair with a high-speed quad -- all for a quick ride up to the snowfields.
And, the nighttime is the right time at Mt. Hood Skibowl just down the road in Government Camp. Tubing extends to 8:15 p.m. for at least a couple of Saturdays into January. Night skiing and riding are open from 3 to 10 p.m. every day.
A favorite for Eugene skiers and riders, Willamette Pass will be open Wednesdays through Sundays for the season, except for holidays. The mountain celebrates its 75th birthday this season.
