Deer Mountain Ski Resort, aka Mystic Miner Ski Resort, which closed in 2017 after 50 years of operation, has been sold and is planning on reopening in December next year, according to an announcement by the new owners Keating Resources. The ski area was shut down amid bankruptcy proceedings four years ago.

Gerald Keating, CEO of Keating Resources, said that a 150-acre winter sports venue and lodge will reopen December 1, 2022, with one of the longest tubing runs in the country supported by a 750-foot long magic carpet lift, which will cost around $1 million to put in place. They started selling 130 fully-improved one to three-acre mountainside home lots four months ago. The private gated community will be called Deer Mountain Village offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. No mention was included about reopening ski runs and chairlifts at this time, but nearly all infrastructure remains from when the mountain closed after foreclosure in 2017.

The sale was completed this past summer. Located in the scenic Black Hills, which is known for its downhill skiing, cross country trails, and miles of snowmobiling trails, there normally is a good snowpack with a peak elevation near 7,000 feet. Deer Mountain offered an 850-foot vertical drop with 44 trails, a terrain park, tubing, two chairlifts, and two surface tows when it was open. Nearby neighbor Terry Peak, with more than 1,100-foot vertical, began operation in 1936. Many thousands of skiers have enjoyed snowsports in the Black Hills over the years, which offers the highest peaks between the Rockies and the Alps in Europe.

Deer Mountain is next to over 400 miles of snowmobile and ATV trails, fly fishing in Spearfish Creek. Well-known gaming and entertainment venues are located a short drive away in Deadwood.

Keating Resources, located in Atkinson, Nebraska, invests in real estate in Florida, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
