The month of August puts Colorado's mountains on display -- their high meadows flowing with chilly creek waters. What better to celebrate the high country with than a few mugs of craft beer.

A quartet of mountain brewfests are on the calendar for August. Most are charitable events with a portion of the money collected going to local nonprofits, who were stretched thin by the coronavirus.

On August 7, the Winter Park Beer Festivalconvenes at the Rendezvous Center just down the road from the Denver-owned ski and snowboard resort. It's a one-afternoon affair -- noon to 5 p.m. -- jam-packed with more than 30 breweries for tasting. Colorado brewers dominate, with a smattering of hard seltzers and ciders. Music goes all afternoon.

On the same day, the Keystone Bluegrass and Beer Festival fills up the streets of the resort village for two days of craft beer and string bands. From 1 to 5 p.m., brew-lovers can taste-test offerings from 16 breweries and one cidery, eat munchies and check out the schwag at some 90 booths. Three venues will host 13 blugrass performances.

Later in the month, the Vail Valley Brew'Au -- the name combines brewfest with luau -- sets up shop at 1 p.m Aug. 21 in downtown Avon below Beaver Creek resort. With personal tasting glass in hand, attendees can sample more than 40 high country brews, ciders, and seltzer, while three bands entertain until 7:30 p.m. Sand sculpture construction, lantern lighting, and food trucks keep things hoppin'.

On Aug. 28-29, head to the southwest corner of the state for the San Juan Brewfest in Durango -- just down the road from Purgatory. The 22nd version focuses on two dozen brewers, including a substantial number from the region, with taps a-flowin' both afternoons crowded into Buckley Park. Three bands share Buckley Park stage with two performances a day.
