Santiago’s Valle Nevado will open June 13, two weeks earlier than planned, because of a heavy snowfall. Ski Portillo plans to open June 21 after receiving nearly five feet of snow.

Valle Nevado’s hotels will remain closed until June 27, but day skiers and those with condo lodgings will have access to most trails, restaurants, and other services. This is the year for U.S. guests to consider a trip to Chile as they have joined the U.S. visa waiver program and the $160 reciprocity fee for U.S. visitors has been lifted, making airline travel more convenient and affordable.

Valle Nevado has joined with Alta/Snowbird, Aspen/Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, Whistler/Blackcomb and Mammoth Mountain to become the first southern hemisphere member of the Mountain Collective Pass

This entitles pass holders two free lift tickets during the 2014 Valle Nevado season. “Top tier” pass holders from Mountain Collective resorts receive a 50 percent discount on lift tickets for up to seven days per pass holder. Valle Nevado pass holders also benefit as they can receive a 50 percent lift ticket discount at any participating Mountain Collective Pass ski resort during the 2014-15 ski season for up to five days at each resort.

New for the 2014 season is the opening of La Leñera, a restaurant, as well as two new apartment buildings, El Plomo and Tupangato, both part of Valle Nevado’s $150 million Master Development Project.

Ski Portillo, meanwhile, is undergoing multi-year renovations at the Hotel Portillo, with almost 50 percent of the lake view guestrooms restored in time for occupancy during this season.

Portillo is offering a number of special weeks: Family Weeks – July 5-12, July 12-19, July 19-26, and July 26-Aug. 2 with activities available for children and families; Friends Week , Aug. 16-23; Chilean Wine Week, Aug. 2-9; and the Chilean Wine Fest, featuring Chile’s top vineyards, Aug. 23-30.

Guests interested in instruction or professional guiding can enroll in several ski camps and clinics including Ski with the Superstars with Chris Davenport, Mike Douglas, Chris Anthony and Wendy Fischer, Aug. 9-16; North American Ski Training Center (NASTC), Aug. 15-24; Ski with Kim Reichhelm, Aug. 9-30, and John Clendenin’s Ski Method, Sept. 6-14.
