Chicago, Minneapolis Host Ski Shows Oct. 19-21; Fun, Info
Midwest ski shows are a sure sign that the winter season is not far away, and two of the Heartland’s top shows take place this weekend: The Windy City Ski and Snowboard Show and the Minnesota Ski and Snowboard Expo.
You will be able to meet manufacturer reps from the top ski and snowboard companies, and see all the new 2012/13 gear. It's a good time to get advice on new purchases you might be considering. Local Heartland ski areas and top destination resorts from many western states also will be on hand to help plan winter vacations and answer questions. Pro skiers and snowboarders will be making appearances.
Ski resorts from Minnesota and Wisconsin will be on hand as well as a some representatives from western resorts. Local retailers and manufacturing reps will be showcasing the latest gear.
The Windy City Ski and Snowboard Show, Chicagoland's newest consumer snowsports show, is at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center, Oct. 19-21. The three-day show, now in its fourth season, features lots of prizes and lift ticket giveaways. Show hours are 3-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.
Daily admission is $12. Kids 11 and under are free. Present your admission ticket to the "lift ticket redemption area" for discount vouchers to Michigan’s Boyne Resorts and Indianhead Mountain. You can do this each day you attend with the purchase of a full price admission ticket.
Indianhead provides a voucher allowing you to ski free the second day with the purchase of a first full-day lift ticket, and it also offers 10-percent off on lodging. Boyne Mountain and Highlands is offering a lift ticket, good at either resort during the upcoming season except over Christmas and New Year Holiday weeks. The convention center offers free parking for show attendees, and there's also a free trolley to nearby shopping destinations.
The sixth annual Minnesota show again takes place at the Mall of America, Oct. 19-21, produced by BEWI Sports. Admission and parking are free. Show hours are Friday 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Giveaways – lift tickets, equipment and more – will take place every hour on the Mall’s Rotunda. Entertainment includes the Skyriders, a high-flying trampoline show. Test your balance in the Gibbon Slackline Demo Area or on a special indoor snow slope in the Sears Court, presented by Skijammers Ski & Snowboard School and Hyland Ski Area.
"The shows always get me pumped up for the ski season," Chicago area resident Steve Lightbourne, told SnoCountry.com. "You can find a lot of information online, but I like being there looking at new equipment and talking with resort reps," said the longtime skier.
