Busy Summer Ahead At Snowbird With New Lift, Recreation

Snowbird summer

There’ll be plenty of activity at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in Utah during the off-season, highlighted by erection of a high-speed quad to replace the venerable Little Cloud chair.

The new lift, which is expected to be up and running next season, will track the same route as the 1980-era Little Cloud that takes skiers and riders from the floor of Gad Valley to the top of Hidden Peak, on the west side of the mountain. As a side bonus, Snowbird will be selling the old chairs from Little Cloud to benefit Wasatch Adaptive Sports, which runs therapeutic recreation for people with special needs.

This summer, crews also will be installing a new pump station in Peruvian Gulch that will expand snowmaking capability all over the mountain.

On the horizon is a new detachable high-speed quad to replace Gad 2 chair, an original Snowbird lift from 1971 that serves the lower Gad Valley terrain, and a “snowcoaster” in the base area by the Peruvian Express lift. After requiring some alterations in location and environmental impact, the Salt Lake County Planning Commission recently approved the mountain-style coaster. Both the Gad 2 lift and coaster are expected to be finished by 2013.

Meanwhile, the summer recreation activities are under way up Little Cottonwood Canyon. New for Snowbird this year is a summer sports camp for youths 10-15 years old. Held Aug. 6-10, the camp offers professional instruction in mountain biking, swimming, hiking and climbing. For information, call (801) 947-8222, or download the registration form online.

Camp Snowbird for children 4-12 years old runs Mondays through Fridays through Aug. 17. Activities include swimming, hiking, science project, and arts and crafts.

The Aerial Tram opens June 15, just in time for Snowbird’s annual Brewfest June 16-17. A single adult ride costs $16, or all-day pass for $22. Family rates also available. Other summer activities at the Little Cottonwood Canyon resort include alpine slide, the Peruvian Chair and Tunnel ride, Mountain Flyer, climbing wall, bungee trampoline, ropes course and mechanical bull.
