Boyne Hemlock Cup

Ever wanted to ski into a Michigan May? Now’s your chance with the Boyne Mountain Hemlock Open coming Saturday, May 4.

Combine skiing and golf on the same day with a two person team competition. You make two slalom runs in a dual format in the morning, and in the afternoon play nine holes on the Mountain’s MonuPine course. Each team member’s best slalom run will be added to their golf score to determine the winning team. You have to obtain the registration form online. Lodging packages start from $87 per person.

It’s not the first time Boyne Mountain has been able to ski into May. I remember Art Tebo, who was founder Evert Kircher’s general manager years ago, saying that one of his favorite May memories was skiing in the morning, morel mushroom hunting, and playing golf in the afternoon; all on the same day.

In other Midwest news, Michigan’s Crystal Mountain has announced that they will be adding a new chairlift and additional skiing and boarding terrain on the south side of the ski hill during the summer.

The old Buck chairlift, installed in 1978, is being replaced with a new Skytrac quad lift, similar to the Loki quad installed a couple of years ago. In addition the Buck slope is being modified with contour modifications, and additional terrain is being added on the ski hill’s south side; where the new lift is being installed.

It’s part of Crystal’s commitment to continue upgrading and improving all facets of their winter operation. Over the last decade or so they have added new lifts and significantly improved the mountain skiing and snowboarding experience making it one of the Heartland’s premier resorts.

Crystal is hosting its eighth annual Michigan Beer & Brat Festival on Saturday, May 25. There will be live entertainment and over 100 of Michigan’s finest microbrews, local hard cider and mead will be available.

The festival, held outdoors, runs from 4-8 p.m., and an After Glow Party is in the Vista Lounge from 8 p.m.-midnight.  Admission is $10 and includes a commemorative beer glass for the first 1,000 tickets sold.  Food and beverage is $2 per token required. A lodging package from $99 per adult, per night, which includes admission to the festival, 10 tokens per adult, and breakfast, is available. The two award winning golf courses will also be open.
