Bode’s Brother ‘Chilly’ Miller Dies From Apparent Seizure

Chelone “Chilly” Miller, the snowboarding younger brother of Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller, died Sunday of “an apparent seizure” in a van where he was living near Mammoth Mountain, Calif.

Miller, 29, had been severely injured in a 2005 motorcycle accident that left him in a coma for 11 days. He has had other seizures apparently stemming from the accident.

Miller returned to competitive snowboarding in 2010 with a superpark victory at Mammoth, using what had become his “go huge” signature style. His goal was to qualify in snowboardcross for the U.S. Olympic Snowboarding Team that will compete at Sochi, Russia next February.

That Olympic dream had shown promise recently with a fourth place finish in the 2013 Spring U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Canyons, Utah and an overall victory at the Rahlves Banzai Tour at Sugar Bowl, Calif. in March.

“He loved life so much; it made him easy to love and easy to be around,” Bode Miller told The Ski Channel shortly after learning about his brother’s death. “I’m going to miss him a lot.”

“Chelone Miller was an aspiring elite athlete who had made great progress as a snowboardcross rider this past season,” said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Bill Marolt. “We are all deeply saddened at the news of his death and extend our condolences to the entire Miller family.”

The younger Miller has been seen in Warren Miller and other film productions.
