BC’s Sun Peaks Resort: Camps, Snowshoe Tours, Dog Sleds

Sun Peaks Resort (Facebook)

Sun Peak’s Resort is gearing up for the season with some new and old options from snowshoe tours to dog sled rides. Sun Peaks is scheduled to open for the 2013-14 season Nov. 23.

Canadian air carrier WestJet offers a new, daily Vancouver to Kamloops flight beginning in late November, saving flyers a 220-mile drive. The newly remodeled Kamloops airport is then a 45-minute shuttle ride (or drive) to the resort.

Bring the kids to the new Family Fun Race Camps. There’s professional race coaching, video analysis, gate training, Friday Race Series, and après party. The 2-day camp for adults (13+) is $299; kids (6-12) $259. Camps run Wednesday and Thursdays Jan. 8-March 20. Also new are the off-piste camps for adults and kids, Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 23-Feb. 19. Cost for the 3-day camps is $399 for adults and $329 for kids.

Maybe this is the year to try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. The new guided, 5-hour, 12 km (about 7.5 miles) backcountry snowshoe adventure begins at the central village and ends at McGillivray Lake. Learn about the environment and area history along the way, rewarding yourself when you reach your destination with a picnic lunch at the McGillivray Lake Outpost.

The Nordic Centre offers guided moonlight ski and chocolate fondue with live entertainment. Take a lesson or clinic to hone your skills.

You don’t have to miss your pooch while you’re on vacation. Get up close and personal with the dog sled team, run by Mountain Man Dogsled Adventures. Help hook the dogs up to their sleds, take a short driving lesson, and then get ready for a ride with your eight new best friends on the trails. Future dog sled team members were added when a litter of six was born this October.

Dine in the Voyageur Bistro in the Kookaburra Lodge that serves French-Canadian inspired meals surrounded by historical Canadian décor. Plenty of artifacts and antiques.

Here’s your chance to ski with gold medalist and now Canadian Senator Nancy Greene Raine most Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m.
