The #racetoopen is officially underway between Colorado's Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin. Meanwhile, Vermont's Killington Resort has also thrown a hat into the ring as well.

Arapahoe Basin has won the #racetoopen the past few seasons, and with snow expected throughout the Colorado High Country this week, it is positioned to once again become the first resort in the United States to open for the season.

"The last couple days of snowmaking have been even better than I was expecting and the forecast later in the week is improving," noted Arapahoe Basin CEO Alan Henceroth in his latest Al's Blog post. "It is still too early to pick an opening date, but you can start dusting off the skis and snowboards."

On the other side of Loveland Pass, Loveland Ski Area continues snowmaking as conditions permit. From the Loveland Snowmaking Update: "Our snowmaking team has been making snow every night on the upper section of the mountain. The snowguns have been blowing snow for about 12 hours a night on Catwalk and Mambo. The snowmaking team has also been blowing snow off Lift 3 for our early season Race Training program. It looks like the temperatures are going to be good to make snow at night this week. Loveland Ski Area hopes to open sometime Mid October to Early November. Last year Loveland Ski Area opened on October 20th."

Colorado's Copper Mountain also kicked off snowmaking operation last week in preparation for the Land Rover U.S. Alpine Ski Team training at the Summit County resort in Early November.

Killington kicked off snowmaking operations over the weekend in the Northridge area and on the Superstar Headwall in preparation for the Audi FIS Ski Women's World Cup coming up Thanksgiving weekend. The HomeLight Killington Cup returns to Vermont November 29-December 1, featuring the best female alpine skiers in the world racing on Killington’s world-class snow, including Olympic champion and Land Rover U.S. Alpine Ski Team member Mikaela Shiffrin. Plus, live music from Grace PotterRecycled PercussionTwiddle and DJ Logic, autograph signings, fireworks, parades and more. General admission is free, with VIP and grandstand tickets still available on killington.com.

Killington plans to continue snowmaking as conditions permit, and no date has yet been set for opening day. However, when Killington does open for the season, skiers will be greeted by a new fixed-grip quad chair that replaced the old North Ridge triple chair.
