SnoCountry SnoCast: Strong Coastal Storm Aims For The East

Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine has turned snowier for the end of October. (Sugarloaf/Twitter)

Here we go! The season’s first, strong coastal storm will take aim at the East during the weekend bringing some wild weather. Meanwhile, we enjoy some mild skiing/riding in the West.

Eastern U.S. & Canada

We’ll get our closest look so far this young season at a nor’easter impacting the East. A classic low pressure system will develop in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday, glide through the Southeast Friday, then deliver heavy rain and wind to much of the Northeast Saturday.

Some high elevation snow will mix over the mountains of Maine. It’ll be gusty with winds up to 40 mph. If this were to hit a month from now, we’d be talking some big snow. In this case, look for mainly rain, ending as some snowflakes with a colder breeze Sunday.

Wildcat (NH) and many New England resorts picked up snow on Oct. 24th. (Wildcat/Facebook)

A cold weather pattern sets up Sunday, allowing for potential snow through Tuesday. For newly-opened resorts, Saturday will be your better day on Minnesota’s Wild Mountain while Sunday should be better for Vermont’s Mount Snow and New Hampshire’s Wildcat.

Western U.S. & Canada

The weather outlook will be generally sunny and mild with a couple of systems bringing rain/snow through the end of the month. It’ll be cool enough for resorts to fire up the snow guns and make snow, while warming enough in the afternoon to provide comfortable skiing/riding conditions. A rain/snow mix will hit British Columbia and Alberta Thursday-Friday, then again Sunday-Monday. A better shot at snow comes into the Rockies Monday night through Wednesday. Areas that plan to be open this weekend include Wolf Creek, Arapahoe Basin, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe and Loveland.

Check back with SnoCast next week as we get closer to more ski areas announcing opening dates.
