Brattleboro Harris Hill JumpMore than 40 of the world’s top ski jumpers from the U.S., Europe and Canada – those not competing at the Olympics, that is – will be leaping from the track at the traditional Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition Feb. 15-16 at Brattleboro in southern Vermont.

Chris Lamb won the 2010 and 2013 Harris Hill events and hold the hill record for the longest jump at 335 feet, has the opportunity to retire the Harris Hill trophy with another win – a feat that’s only been five times in the 91 years since the event was first held in 1922. Only an occasional snow drought, World War II, and a three-year hiatus to rebuild the jump in the 1990s have interrupted the series.

Taking in the jumps in Brattleboro (Cedar St. – left off I-91 and follow signs) is a local opportunity to get a glimpse of the event most will watch from Sochi, Russia during the Winter Olympics this month. Jumpers will launch off the Olympic-sized 90-meter jump at speeds of 60 mph. This is the only U.S. stop on the FIS Cup Series.

Competition will begin each day at 11 a.m. and will conclude by 4 p.m. It is described as a family-friendly event with opening ceremonies, appearances by Jumper the mascot, food and drink vendors, a bonfire, and more.

Tickets are $20 (adults); $15 (youth 6-12); free (5 and under). Payment at the gate is by cash and check only. Purchase online here. (http://www.brattleborotix.com). Discounted tickets may be purchased through Feb. 14 at a number of local stores. The event is totally staged by volunteers with Pepsi as presenting sponsor. Other sponsors are Entergy, The Richards Group, Mount Snow Resort, and Foard Panel.
