XC Ski Camp at Sun Mountain Lodge

Early cross country ski camps and festivals give skiers a chance to get back on the snow. Every year, XC skiers flock to these late November and early December events to meet new ski friends, kick out the kinks, and start the ski season.

They partake in ski clinics, equipment demos, and indoor ski shows. But mostly, these XC ski aficionados relish sliding on the snow again, after their long wait since last winter.

Some of the XC ski festivals are race camps intended for more advanced skiers, but most have a recreational component for the average person. XCSkiResorts.com  put together a snapshot of this year's XC ski camps and festivals for SnoCountry.com readers.

The granddaddy of XC ski festivals is the Yellowstone Ski Festival, in West Yellowstone, Mont. scheduled Nov. 26-30. Representatives from the major XC ski, boot, pole and wax suppliers will be on hand.

The general public is invited to test drive the latest in equipment and the company reps can help skiers to find the gear to suit every skier's needs. The on-snow demo is held on the Rendezvous Ski Trail system, which is located right in town. The clinics are split into various ability levels for skate and classic skiing.

The Indoor Ski Show takes place in Hayden Hall at the West Yellowstone Conference Hotel from 7-9:30 p.m. each festival night. Skiers can meet the reps and talk about gear in a warm indoor setting and there are nightly wax clinics scheduled.

The Ski Camp at Sun Mountain Lodge  in Winthrop, Wash. is organized by the Methow Nordic Ski Club Dec. 19 -22 as a 3-day camp with instruction for all ability levels, breakfast and lunch, daily morning yoga and stretching sessions, and nightly clinic presentations. A special hotel rate is offered.

Crested Butte, Colo. offers the Thanksgiving Training Camp Nov 28-30 at Crested Butte Nordic Center. The camp has clinics for skiers of every level in classic and skate skiing, lunch, movie night, and a kick-off party.

Camps in Canada include the Sun Peaks 2-Day Nordic Ski Camp located outside of Kamloops and scheduled Dec. 14-15 and Jan. 18-19. The camps are led by an experienced team of instructors and coaches providing daily instruction, video analysis, souvenir, lunch and access to the Sports Centre. The Silver Star Mountain Resort XC Supercamps are scheduled in Vernon, Canada offered in two and a half or five-day programs on select dates from November through February.

Don’t wait for the snow to fly in your backyard – now is the time to start planning to get ready for the coming winter season.
