Novel Training Concepts for Balance, Coordination and Agility in Skiing

Written by Declan AJ Connolly.

Don't trip or fall dude! Skiing is a sport that depends heavily on the ability to balance and coordinate movements at high speeds on difficult terrain. It also requires strength to maintain these balance and co-ordination positions. Finally, our ability to use the available proprioceptive and visual cues will result in overall better responses as we carve our turns. Proprioceptive cues relate to our ability to know where out body parts are at any given time without having to see them. Visual cues on the other hand are provided by using our vision to help track objects or terrain so we may make coordinated responses. The exercises that are described here have been developed by Dr. Declan Connolly at the University of Vermont and are used with many of the US junior development ski teams. They involve minimal equipment, just some tennis balls, soccer balls, paper cups or cones and a role of masking tape. They are excellent in group situations especially on days when you might not want to do a strenuous workout but do want to do something productive with focus. The exercises are fun and challenging. Many of these exercises are available as part of the "Total Training for Alpine Skiing" DVD. For more information contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
