Ski Or Ride In NYC’s Union Square Thursday. Really!
There certainly hasn’t been much snow to speak of in New York City this winter, but Manhattanites will get a chance to ski or ride on “Snow Day,” Thursday (Feb. 9) in Union Square Park.
The Olympic Regional Development Agency (ORDA), Ski Areas of New York (SANY), and “I Love New York” plan to bring tons of snow to the city for this special event. Organizers say the goal is to remind New Yorkers that their mountains have plenty of snow – both fresh and machine-made.
The public is invited to Union Square from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Union Square Park (South at 14th Street). Learn about skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ziplining, and snowshoeing. Snow will be unloaded and made Wednesday evening from 9-11 p.m.
ORDA will be trucking making tons of fresh snow, showing off the latest snowmaking technology.
The park’s new “winter wonderland” features the Burton Ringlet Park for children ages three to six, for testing kids snowboards and learning the basics. Instructors will tow kids on snow features and around obstacles.
Professional snowboarder Pat Moore, fresh off his bronze medal for his video part at the recent X-Games, will be on hand to talk about his sport. Red Bull’s Street Team will be giving away prizes like skis, movies, shirts, and more. Experts from the mountains will be on hand to discuss all the winter activities available in the state’s mountains.
